Use of nonwovens
Textiles and nonwovens are all around us. As the name suggests, the special feature of nonwovens is that unlike textiles they are not woven. Nonwovens are fiber structures that have been joined and bonded with one another using various methods. Due to their individual configuration and great adaptability, they can be found in all areas, from clothing shops and operating theaters, to vehicles, homes or on the roads, where they are largely invisible.

The HydroFormer concept builds on Voith’s long experience in the paper and pulp industry. With HydroFormer technology the suspension is highly diluted, so nonwovens can be produced entirely from cellulose, a renewable and cost-effective raw material.
A wide range of processable fibers (cellulose, synthetic and inorganic fibers) up to 40 mm long can be used in various applications. This technology is already being used to produce teabags, coffee filters, nonwoven wallpapers, cigarette filter papers, overlay papers, fiberglass mats and hydro-entangled nonwovens. Multi-ply nonwovens can be produced directly, without downstream processing, from several layers with different material combinations.
The productivity of these systems eclipses that of conventional systems. To provide investment security, customer tests with the HydroFormer technology and optimized Voith fabrics can be carried out at our Düren pilot facility.
In collaboration with Trützschler Nonwovens, Voith offers solutions for manufacturing wet-laid and hydro-entangled nonwovens. The technologies of both companies are applied in a jointly developed production process known as wet-laid spunlacing.
The job of the Voith HydroFormer is to form the wet-laid nonwovens. In this “wet-laid process”, which is similar to the manufacturing process for paper, a suspension of fibers and water is passed over a wire on which a homogeneous fiber mat forms. The downstream hydro-entanglement (spunlacing) process using the Trützschler Nonwovens AquaJet system produces bonded nonwovens that can also be textured or perforated if required. Because AquaJet bonds the nonwovens exclusively through the momentum of the water jets there is no need for binding agents or bi-component fibers.
Trützschler was established in 1888 and has a workforce of around 3,000. It is one of the leading manufacturers of textile machines in the world. The family-owned company steeped in tradition specializes in machines, equipment and accessories for the spinning preparation, nonwoven and man-made fiber industries.
Trützschler Nonwovens is a division of Trützschler Nonwovens & Man-Made Fibers and resulted from the amalgamation of the long-established companies Fleissner, Erko and Bastian. The company provides manufacturers from all over the world with solutions for the entire nonwoven process chain from bale opening to fiber blending, web formation, bonding, finishing and winding, and for man-made fiber facilities.
In October 2013, Voith and Trützschler Nonwovens achieved an important milestone: a nonwoven wipe from their jointly developed wet-laid spunlacing production process successfully passed the official third edition of the INDA and EDANA test guidelines and is therefore certified as being “flushable”. Trützschler Nonwovens and Voith have succeeded in producing wet-laid spunlaced (hydro-entangled) nonwovens with high strength when wet.
Because the wet-laid spunlacing process does not use any binding agents or bi-component fibers the wipes quickly disintegrate in water and the fiber material is 100% bio-degradable. Another advantage of using large amounts of long-fiber pulp is that this substantially reduces production costs.
Successful testing to EDANA/INDA criteria is impressive testimony to the efficiency of the newly developed wet-laid spunlacing production process.

With decades of experience in cleaning synthetic and metal fabrics, Voith uses high pressure water jets to remove contamination on the surface, in the structure and at the edges of a fabric. The main nozzle of CleanLine gives a high number of water jets that are close together for concentrated cleaning of the fabric. An air-knife is attached to the cleaning head directly after the water jets to help drying of the fabric.

Albaad Corp., Israel
New customer groups thanks to Voith HydroFormer
The three companies Albaad Corp., Trützschler Nonwovens and Voith have teamed up to realize an innovative technology for flushable nonwovens.
Albaad Corp. had independently developed a technology for flushable cleaning wipes in accordance with EDANA/INDA guidelines for nonwovens. Following a thorough assessment of the technologies they offered, Albaad then opted to cooperate with Voith and Trützschler as its technology partners.
The three-year development project was driven by the increasing demand for environmentally friendly products and Albaad’s endeavors to consolidate its position as the leading manufacturer of wet wipes worldwide.
A wide range of flushable nonwovens provides the flexibility to meet individual customer needs and fluctuating market requirements.
Voith and Trützschler Nonwovens are proud to be part of Albaad’s ambitious project. The new production line for flushable fabrics is ideal for bringing the technologies of the two companies closer together. The HydroFormer, Voith’s wet laying machine, and Trützschler Nonwovens’ AquaJet for hydroentangling are both extremely productive and highly efficient machines that have proven effective in a large number of facilities worldwide.
The production line will be installed in Dimona, Israel and will go on stream as early as the middle of 2015 as the world’s most advanced facility for flushable nonwovens.
Johns Manville, Wertheim

Johns Manville is counting on Voith when it comes to producing fiberglass nonwovens for wallpaper and automotive parts.
As well as a HydroFormer, Voith also supplied the quality control system (QCS) to the plant in Wertheim in 2013. The QCS includes a scanner for the quality parameters color and thickness, control system and information system.
Johns Manville is especially satisfied with the Voith LSC sensors that are built into the scanner and reliably measure and monitor the quality parameters color and thickness. Its high traversing speed in conjunction with fast digital signal processing delivers high-resolution profiles for precise CD and MD profile control. OnQ GradeControl enables multi-variable control of the measured parameters. In addition, the stability of the quality parameters in machine direction is assured.
The OnView information system archives and visualizes all process-related data. OnView’s intuitive and flexible interface allows users to select a customized overview of the data from the entire plant that is relevant to them.
