Voith Siemens Hydro Shanghai wins largest-ever order from China worth EUR 120 million

Heidenheim, Germany; Shanghai, China: Voith Siemens Hydro Power Genera-tion in Shanghai has won a contract for the delivery of the electro-mechanical equipment for Jinping II hydro power station on the Yalong River in the Chinese province of Sichuan. The order is worth approximately EUR 120 Million, making it the largest-ever deal for Voith Siemens Shanghai since the company's establish-ment in 1994. The order was placed by Ertan Hydropower Development Co. (EHDC).

At the contract signing ceremony held in Shanghai on 23 August 2007, Dr. Hubert Lienhard, CEO of Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, said: ”Gaining this major contract is a significant milestone for Voith Siemens Hydro in China. It is proof of the trust Ertan Hydro Power Development Co. have in Voith, and a rec-ognition of the efforts of all those involved in this project.” For Voith Siemens Hy-dro, the contract was signed by Aage Steinar Dalsjoe, President of Voith Siemens Hydro in Shanghai.

The contract marks the kick-off of a major hydro power development along the Yalong River, China’s fourth-largest source for this type of energy generation. Located at the lower reaches of the river, Jinping II has a total capacity of 4,800 MW and is therefore the largest of the five hydro power stations on the Yalong. It will be equipped with eight Francis turbines, each rated at 600 MW. The power station has a maximum head of 318 meters and, running along 17 kilometers, its penstock is one of the longest in the world.

Jinping II hydro station is an important part of China’s strategic energy plan to transmit electricity from the west to the country's highly industrialized east, where the demand for energy has been rapidly increasing in recent years. Completion of the plant is scheduled for 2014.

Voith Siemens has already supplied equipment for more than 50 large-scale hy-dro power projects in China.
