Voith Paper: The rebuild of the board machine Ningbo BM 2 was completed in the shortest possible time.

Smooth Start-Up of Upgraded Ningbo BM 2

The rebuild of the board machine Ningbo BM 2 was completed in the shortest possible time. In mid-May 2007, Ningbo Zhonghua Paper Co. Ltd., belonging to the APP group, started producing art board. It took less than 10 days for Voith Paper to upgrade BM 2 to an art board machine.

The main goal of the BM 2 rebuild was to extend the product range to produce art board as well as ivory board. Both sides of the new grade are double coated to achieve uniform smoothness and gloss.

BM 2 is a four-ply fourdrinier machine with a wire width of 4,300 mm, producing board in a basis weight range of 210 - 400 g/m². The maximum operating speed is 550 m/min, and the design speed for new parts is 650 m/min.

The BM 2 rebuild focused on the approach flow system, headbox, wire section, press section and the coating unit.

In the approach flow system, Voith Paper installed two MSA screens, one for the 1st screening stage for the middle ply and one for the dilution water line. Both are equipped with slotted C-bar screen baskets.

To optimize the CD basis weight profile, one of the existing headboxes was upgraded with ModuleJet dilution technology and OnQ Profilmatic control.
Additional drainage elements were installed in the wire section.

To improve formation and MD/CD ratio, a DuoShake unit is used. In addition, a smoothing press was installed as 4th press to increase the surface smoothness.

To meet the high quality demands made on art board as the final product, the brand-new DynaCoat C coater is used for the first time worldwide. This new coating unit features short rebuild times due to extended pre-assembly. It requires less space than comparable coater types, and its modular design allows easy upgrades. Of course, DynaCoat C can also be installed in new machines.

To achieve most efficient drying rates, infrared dryers and a Krieger hot air dryer (HCB-Turn) are used for non-contact drying.

The Voith Paper scope of supply also included an extensive automation package. It comprised OnControl process control system with hardware and software

based on the PCS7 standard for coater, infrared dryers and HCB-Turn, as well as basic engineering for dilution water line and new drainage elements.

Headquartered in Duantang, Ningbo, Province of Zhejiang, APP Ningbo Zhonghua Paper Co. Ltd. produces mainly high-quality board grades on three machines. With a total output of more than 500,000 tons/year, APP Ningbo is one of China’s largest board producers.

Ningbo Zhonghua Paper Co. Ltd. is most satisfied with the rebuild. According to the customer, the BM 2 upgrade strengthens Ningbo’s leading position as a producer of top-quality board in the Chinese market.
