Voith Turbo: The Istanbul Municipal Parliament has decided to invest some EUR 1.8 billion into the expansion and further development of its transport infrastructure by 2009 Bus Manufacturer MJT Delivers Double Deckers to Istanbul The Istanbul Municipal Parliament has decided to invest some EUR 1.8 billion into the expansion and further development of its transport infrastructure by 2009. As part of this program, 52 vehicles made by the Hungarian vehicle manufacturer MJT will be fitted with DIWA.3 E transmissions and delivered to the Turkish metropolis. The double deckers have 74 seats. According to Gyula Kovacs, Voith Turbo representative in Eger, Hungary, IETT Istanbul Transport consciously decided in favor of double decker buses. "The bus routes through the 15-million metropolis can be very long. Passengers therefore prefer to spend their time sitting down rather than standing, which is often the case in articulated buses. Double deckers simply have more seats." The vehicles are driven by 249-HP DAF engines. The production facilities of MJT are located in Debrecen, Hungary's second-largest city. The young company, founded by Sándor Tarnai as recently as 1994, has evolved from one of the largest commercial vehicle workshops of the country. To¬day MJT is among the leading Hungarian bus manufacturers. Apart from the MJT 002-11 D double decker, the portfolio includes a 12-meter solo bus, as well as an 18-meter midibus - all of them with low-floor design. Double decker buses have a long tradition in Istanbul. At the moment, MJT is working on a further vehicle with a self-supporting body. This bus will again be fitted with DIWA transmissions. MJT also intends to integrate axles from Voith Turbo Drive Systems. Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith AG. Voith sets standards worldwide for papermaking technology, power transmission, energy technology, and industrial services. Voith was founded in 1867. With approximately 34 000 employees, annual sales of € 3.7 billion and over 250 locations worldwide, Voith is one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe. Voith is an official partner of the initiative "Germany - Land of Ideas." |
