Voith Industrial Services: Mobile solution increases efficiency of maintenance

Instant information with PDAs

Substainable maintenance concepts are an investment in the future. They minimize downtimes, increase the efficiency of plants, and are also proving to be invaluable for concerns such as workplace safety and environmental protection. If the production needs to intervene in the maintenance tasks or if the maintenance has to be outsourced to an external provider, information must be readily available at all times. This calls for a unique transparency. Mobility4Maintenance, a software developed by Voith Industrial Services Paper GmbH and Emprise Consulting Düsseldorf, makes it possible by enabling quick access to all plant information with the help of PDAs.

Mobility4Maintenance (M4M) is an ideal solution for conventional maintenance as well as modern maintenance concepts such as TPM (Total Productive Maintenance). It ensures that every production employee has on-site access to all relevant information. The strengths of this mobile solution, which has been already tested in the paper industry, lie in the easy operation and in the high flexibility that enables enhanced usability. M4M is integrated in SAP PM or SAP CS according to SAP standards. Its rapid and uniform feedback or malfunction reports on the precise object, quick evaluation based on process-oriented codes as well as consistent documentation enable reduced operating costs. The robust device accompanies production employees or maintenance personnel to every technical object. Recurrent operations and a familiar ‘look and feel’ design guarantee high user acceptance. A small computer in the hand-held device enables calculations even away from the main outlet.

The planning of all tasks and allocation to individual jobs is carried out in SAP PM. The system updates confirmed jobs and creates malfunction reports. M4M processes the data and notifications for the PDAs. Plant data is transferred to and from SAP PM using mobile technology such as GPRS, UMTS or wireless LAN. Modern encryption methods or secured transfer over the company’s LAN ensure data security. In this way, even the latest information is available on-site at all times. The data and the functions are made available to the responsible employee, who can then carry out the jobs on the respective technical device. Bar codes and RFID tags can be used on the equipment to be tracked. The RFID technology also enables maintaining a log file on the premises itself.
