Voith Drive - successful drive solution in Gemmrigheim, Germany

At the “Papierfabrik am Neckar” in Gemmrigheim, Germany, the possibility of increasing the speed of the PM 3 was previously limited by the existing gearbox drive in the dryer section. It was driven by a longitudinal transmission and caused noise and vibration problems.

Hence, a new dryer section drive solution was sought with the goal of eliminating the existing problems and keeping the changeover time and hence the investment amortization time as short as possible. Another challenge was the limited space available on the drive side, making the implementation of a conventional drive system with drive shafts, gearboxes and couplings very difficult.

The Voith Drive was the alternative that accomplished the goal here. “We are sure we made the right choice for a drive solution with the Voith Drive. Our targets were exceeded and the investment will be amortized quickly,” explains Gerd Mogath, PM 3 Production Manager in Gemmrigheim.

By mounting the motors on the tender side cylinder shafts, downtime could be cut to just three days. While the longitudinal transmission was dismantled from the drive side, the Voith Drives were simultaneously mounted on the tender side.

After smooth startup the advantages of the new drive design quickly became evident.

Because gearboxes are no longer needed, the noise and vibration levels of the machine are much lower. The drive system also shows advantages when considered over the long term. Maintenance requirements are greatly reduced, and oil leaks are now a thing of the past. Energy savings are additionally achieved through the elimination of all transmission losses. These factors guarantee fast amortization of the drive system.

Approximately 110,000 tons of coated and uncoated printing and writing paper are produced per year on two machines at the “Papierfabrik am Neckar” in Gemmrigheim. Surface sized offset paper, colored and white, with basis weights of 50-180 g/m² are produced on the PM 3.

Voith Paper is a division of Voith and is one of the leading partners to the paper industry. Voith Paper optimizes the paper production process through constant innovations. More than a third of worldwide paper production is produced on Voith Paper machines.

Voith sets standards in paper, energy, mobility and service markets. Founded on January 1, 1867, Voith has a current workforce of 37,000, sales of EUR 4 billion and over 270 locations worldwide. It is one of the largest family-owned enterprises in Europe.

Voith is an official partner to the initiative “Germany - Land of Ideas”.
