Service Center Dueren copes extreme situation

Following an unfortunate fire in December 2007, Fritz Peters, Gelsenkirchen had a successful re-start up of PM1 in February 13th 2007 thanks to Voith Paper Rolls, Dueren. The PM 1 now shines with new brightness and runs with Voith Paper roll covers, felts and fabrics. Extensive fire damage prompted not only the planned rebuilds at the drying hood and exchanges of some of the drying cylinders, but also a near complete rebuild of the drying section and parts of the press section that were destroyed by the fire.

As soon as the Fire Marshall authorized the release of the building, Voith Paper Rolls Dueren deployed a mounting crew to begin the clean-up and repair work from damages the fire had left behind. 120 guide rolls and all felt stretcher and felt guides.of the press and drying section had to be dismantled and repaired. In addition, it was necessary to grind the drying cylinders. Therefore, Voith Paper organized a multinational crew with 5 mobile grinders in a very short period of time to assist in the rebuild.

During the course of the renovations, it was determined that the drying cylinders were damaged from the intense heat from the fire and a large amount of the cylinders had leakages. Quickly it was decided to dismantle the drying cylinders and begin repairs. Due to the additional work it was necessary to add more people to the mounting crew, which was no problem for Voith Paper Rolls Dueren. Sealing, grinding and balancing of the cylinders was done in the Voith Paper Service Center Dueren.

Due to the extensive clean-up operations which were carried out in and at the building it was not possible to access the building. Nevertheless, all tasks were carried out on schedule, which was only possible due to the joint efforts of Voith Paper and Fritz Peters. Originally the start up target day was end of February, but the date was brought forward until February 13th.

“Voith Paper is a competent and reliable partner. Without the worldwide network of Voith Paper and the readiness for action of Voith Paper Rolls Dueren it would have been impossible to cope this very tight time line in such a professional way”, says Huub Haas, plant manager of Fritz Peters, Gelsenkirchen.
