Voith Turbo: Fuel prices are rising, the climate change is a global issue, and millions of people all over the world rely on public transport every day. Two Systems for More Value for the Environment Fuel prices are rising, the climate change is a global issue, and millions of people all over the world rely on public transport every day. With more than 200,000 DIWA transmissions sold, Voith as the specialist for automatic transmissions in citybuses, makes a valuable contribution to the mobility of passengers worldwide. With its know-how of the special demands made on buses, Voith offers two hybrid solutions for economical and eco-friendly applications. Voith has developed the DIWAhybrid based upon the proven DIWA technology and supplemented it by an asynchronous motor. The strength of this parallel hybrid lies in its universal suitability, especially for applications in buses with higher average speeds. In heavy city traffic, Voith relies on the serial hybrid solution ElvoDrive. The core component for both solutions is an inverter especially developed by Voith for hybrid applications in buses. Whatever the choice of storage components, this inverter ensures a stable energy supply up to complete energy management. The first Voith DIWA transmission was presented to the experts as early as 1949. Since then, the power split principle has been ensuring maximum comfort, efficiency and economy and set the standard for automatic transmissions in bus applications. Additionally, public awareness is today influenced much more strongly by environmental issues and the responsibility towards the next generation. Voith, too, is making an active contribution by reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Building upon its unique experience and the combined know-how in mechanics, electrics and electronics, Voith is able to offer two hybrid systems. One of them is the DIWAhybrid, combining the proven features of the DIWA transmission with an electric drive. The parallel hybrid utilizes well-known DIWA advantages, such as the power split principle in the starting range, the secondary retarder and the proven E 300 electronics with the diagnosis software ALADIN. These features are added by a low-loss asynchronous electric motor, which supports the diesel engine during starting and accelerating. During braking, the asynchronous motor turns into a generator and acts as a primary retarder, which ideally supplements the DIWA secondary retarder. As a result, the service brake is protected and brake wear with its associated emissions of fine dust particles is reduced to a minimum. The DIWAhybrid is particularly effective in bus applications with higher average speeds. The second one is the ElvoDrive, a serial hybrid system. Here, the required power is transmitted purely electrically, as with all serial solutions. The efficiency of the components is therefore of elementary importance. This is why the ElvoDrive relies on the Voith TFM technology (TFM = transverse flux machine) for both the generator and the electric motor. With its extremely high efficiency across a wide range, the TFM provides the conditions for an efficient overall system and consequently the reduction of power consumption and emissions. The ElvoDrive generates maximum benefits in heavy city traffic with lower average speeds. Both systems have in common the Voith-developed inverter, ensuring reliable and stable energy management and providing the operator with maximum flexibility when it comes to specifying energy storage systems. Heavy city traffic, or mixed traffic with long-distance sections Voith offers the right hybrid technology for any citybus. With DIWAhybrid and ElvoDrive Voith already has the answers to the questions of tomorrow in terms of fuel consumption and emissions. Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith AG. Voith sets standards worldwide for papermaking technology, power transmission, energy technology, and industrial services. Voith was founded in 1867. With approximately 37 000 employees, annual sales of € 4 billion and over 270 locations worldwide, Voith is one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe. Voith is an official partner of the initiative "Germany Land of Ideas." |
