A hydro success story for 80 years - Kössler celebrates its anniversary


St. Georgen am Steinfelde, Austria: On September 26, the Austrian specialist for small hydro Kössler celebrated its 80th company anniversary. In 1928, Alois Kössler had started out with a workshop for electrical machines in the nearby village of Wilhelmsburg. 80 tremendously successful years later, owners and employees celebrated with more than 160 customers, officials and partners from all over the world. A highlight of the celebration was the inauguration of a new five-axis CNC-machining center for turbine runner manufacturing – the most important investment in the company’s history.

Dr. Roland Muench, Chief Executive Officer of Voith Siemens Hydro, congratulated the staff: ”Since the first day of the company’s operation, the name of Kössler has been standing for pioneering spirit, emission-free generation of electricity from small hydro power, and development of tailor-made products and solutions. Reliability and the ability for a long-term business approach were and still are today key to Kössler’s success.” Kössler has been a member of the Voith Siemens Hydro group since late 2007.

Josef Lampl, Kössler’s Managing Director, said: ”With our highly-skilled staff that carries years of expertise, the currently emerging awareness for renewable energy from hydro power, and our long-lasting customer relationships, we have an excellent perspective into the future as a member of a globally positioned group as is Voith Siemens Hydro.

Through the end of 2009, Kössler will supply equipment for another 40 small hydro power plants all over the world. In Austria alone, untapped hydro power potential till 2020 is estimated at around two billion kilowatt hours. With a current order intake of 38 million Euros and sales of 25 million Euros this fiscal year, Kössler expects to contribute significantly to this development.

Kössler, based in St. Georgen in Austria, is a subsidiary of Voith Siemens Hydro, has over 80 employees and a turnover of 25 million Euros and an export quota of 87 percent.
