This inauguration does not only mark the official completion of the newly built workshop for which ground had been broken in December 2006. The ceremony also clearly demonstrated full-scale operation of Voith Siemens Hydro’s generator manufacture in China. At the event, Voith Siemens Hydro was able to welcome over 80 high rank representatives from trade and industry, as well as from federal, state and local governments. “We are very proud of having completed the new workshop that will satisfy the needs of the booming Chinese and Asian hydro power markets in a way that we call “engineered reliability”, said Aage Dalsjoe, President of Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation Shanghai Ltd. during the ceremony. “China is one of the most important markets for Voith Siemens Hydro worldwide, and the capacity expan-sion of the Shanghai site emphasizes our commitment to deliver excellent hydro power The new workshop offers 3,500 square meters for the manufacture of generator poles and stator bars. Equipped with facilities for manufacturing of 700 MW large units, which is the equivalent of the average capacity of one coal-fired power plant .The workshop will meet the growing needs for large-capacity and high-quality generators in China and other Asian countries. In recent years, China has made rapid progress in hydro power infrastructure construction. This March, the National Development and Reform Commission of China issued the 11th Five-Year Plan for Renewable Energy Development. The new plan states that China will continue to develop hydro power with full effort and increase the share of renewable energy in the overall energy supply over the next five years. Predictions see total installed hydro power capacity in China reach 190 million kW by 2010 and 300 million kW by 2020.
