Voith Paper
Voith Paper successfully starts first Curtain Coater in board machine On June 18, 2010, Mayr-Melnhof's board machine BM 3 in Frohnleiten, Austria, was successfully put back into operation after the rebuild by Voith Paper. At 8.15 am sharp, production was changed from air knife operation to curtain coating and since then, the DF Coat-S is in use. The main reason for the rebuild was the speed limitation caused by the air knife. Thus, Mayr-Melnhof operates the world's first board machine using curtain coating for online graphic coat application in continuous operation. BM 3 started with 550 m/min and a basis weight of 250 g/m2. The board produced was of superior, salable quality right from the first parent roll. All the project targets were met from the start, resulting in a higher quality thanks to improved and homogeneous coverage, while the amount of energy used for drying is reduced considerably due to the much higher solids content. In addition, enhanced flatness ensures excellent runability and a higher productivity of the machine, thus allowing to overcome the previous speed limit. The Technical Director of Mayr-Melnhof's Board Division, Martin Mühlhauser, reports: "We are very pleased with the quality. The project was realized without any troubles and absolutely in time, and the cooperation with Voith Paper was professional and fair. The Curtain Coater has fulfilled our expectations. For us, it was the right decision." Voith Paper is a division of the Voith Group and the leading partner to and a pioneer in the paper industry.
