365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas |
 |
One of the central activities of "Germany – Land of Ideas" is the event series "365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas." From 1500 applications, 366 locations (an extra one for the leap year 2008) where good ideas are created or have been implemented, were selected. Every day of 2008, one of these landmarks will be presented to the public.
Voith participates in this unique event series with an open day at Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik in Kiel at November 25, 2008. Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik manufactures the Maxima 40 CC. The Maxima 40 CC is a locomotive of superlatives: 500 days for the development and production of a locomotive are unparalleled. Powered by a marine diesel engine rated at nearly 5000 HP, the Voith Maxima is the most powerful single-engine diesel-hydraulic locomotive in the world. The six-axle Maxima is over 23 meters long, weighs nearly 130 tons and reaches a maximum speed of 160 km/h. It consists of 70,000 individual components, and 4,000 drawings are required for its construction. The giant vehicle is designed and manufactured at Voith Turbo Lokomotivtechnik GmbH & Co. KG in Kiel, a subsidiary of Voith Turbo GmbH & Co. KG, Heidenheim. All key components such as TurboSplit transmission, final drives, cooling system, vehicle control, cardan shafts and highly flexible couplings are produced by Voith Turbo. The Voith Maxima is not only in a class of its own as far as technology is concerned, it is also the first locomotive in the world to receive the coveted "Red Dot" design award. In February 2007, the Maxima was selected as a prize winner among more than 2500 entries from 43 countries.
Already in 2006 and 2007, every day a specially selected landmark in the "Land of Ideas" was presented to the public. On 11 May 2006, the opening day of the day of the Voith Paper Technology Center, the world's most advanced paper research center, the new facility was also celebrated as a selected place in the Land of Ideas, while Voith Turbo Scharfenberg showed itself to the public on 20 June 2007 with a market of ideas and an open day.
