Voith Hydro: St. Poelten, Austria; Heidenheim, Germany: Voith Hydro will rehabilitate Rodund II hydro power plant after it had been damaged during a fire last summer. Voith Hydro wins 40 million Euro award from Austria St. Poelten, Austria; Heidenheim, Germany: Voith Hydro will rehabilitate Rodund II hydro power plant after it had been damaged during a fire last summer. Operator Voralberger Illwerke has awarded a complete new unit. Voith Hydros scope of supply comprises a reversible pump turbine, an air-cooled motor-generator and its related ancillary equipment. Furthermore, the plant will see an economical optimization and an upgraded energy management system. The output in turbine mode will be increased from 276 to 295 MW. The old unit had been in operation since 1976 - only the power house, the spiral case as well as the draft tube and some mechanical auxiliary equipment, will remain in place. "The pump turbine for Rodund II is characterized by its quick start-up, short response times and its high efficiency. It will play an important role for grid stabilization", explained Dr. Leopold Heninger, CEO of Voith Hydros Austrian Operating Unit: "We have a special challenge in this project: With the commissioning of the unit by the end of 2011, we have to deal with a very short delivery time. But I am sure we will master this tight schedule very well", said Dr. Heninger confidently. Utilizing a head of approx. 350 meters Rodund II generates peak load and regulating electricity. It is located in the Austrian Montafon area and converts the water volumes of the Kops, Silvretta, Luenersee and Vermuntsee reservoirs.
