2025-12-19 Lake Mainit hydropower project: First preventive maintenance completed as part of a long-term service agreement
- Proactive maintenance resolved a critical valve issue, ensuring reliable operation of the hydropower plant.
- Digital monitoring enabled early problem detection, preventing costly downtime.
- Since it is commissioning in 2023, Lake Mainit produces energy with three vertical Francis turbines (24.9 MW) supplied by Voith.
JABONGA, AGUSAN DEL NORTE, PHILIPPINES. Recently, Voith completed the proactive annual preventive maintenance under the long-term service agreement of Lake Mainit's hydropower plant in Jabonga Town, Philippines. The plant includes three vertical Francis turbines that produce a total of 24.9 MW of energy.
The preventive maintenance schedule was programmed to be seven days, covering main inlet valve (MIV) repairs, electrical testing and annual inspection of the components supplied by Voith.
The Lake Mainit hydropower plant was commissioned in 2023 and, in early 2024, signed an L.T.S.A embedded a computerized maintenance management system with Voith. A couple of months later, the customer placed another order for Hydro Pocket to further strengthen L.T.S.A's digital value. In late 2024, a digital health assessment was executed as part of OnCare.Diagnostic, a package that includes data analyses that target to uncover hidden issues and help the hydro operator to plan maintenance activities effectively. The integration of Voith's digital tools and services helps identify hidden issues and mitigate potential risks for customers before they emerge.

During the digital health assessment, a variation in the actuation time of the MIV Unit 1 was detected. Both the customer and L.T.S.A teams were advised to check the MIV. One of the critical tasks during the recent preventive maintenance schedule (PMS) was the U-1 MIV seals replacement and closing the misalignment issue. Addressing this was essential to prevent unexpected shutdowns and maintain safety standards.
This was carried out during the PMS, resulting in the main inlet valve seals being replaced and alignment issues being resolved. They now close without a gap and achieve the closing time as per the original design specification. As a result, the customer benefits from enhanced equipment reliability and reduced risk of unforeseen outages, ensuring continuous power generation.
The recent maintenance activity showed the resilience and smooth collaboration between the customer, the Voith team, local manpower support and the J-Power technical team.
