2026-04-04 How advanced measurement helps paper mills predict failures and reduce losses
- The use of specialised equipment and data analysis makes it possible to identify root causes and improve product quality;
- Voith’s updated portfolio brings together measurement and diagnostic solutions that increase visibility across the production process and support more informed decision-making in the paper industry.
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL. 4 April 2026. Voith is presenting to the market its updated Measurements & Diagnostics (M&D) portfolio, a set of advanced services aimed at accurate fault identification, process optimisation and decision-making support in the paper industry. The solution combines data-collection technology with the know-how of specialists to analyse critical parameters such as vibration, pulsation, temperature and moisture profile across the entire machine, making it possible to quickly identify the root cause of issues that affect paper quality or operational productivity.
In practice, the service acts as a strategic ally in preventing losses and unplanned shutdowns. Through detailed measurements and integrated analyses, it is possible to detect deviations that are often not visible to the naked eye, guiding targeted maintenance actions, process adjustments or investment decisions. As a result, pulp and paper manufacturers can reduce waste, improve operational stability and ensure greater production efficiency.
The portfolio covers a wide range of services, including:
- Vibration analysis.
- Pulsation analysis in approach flow.
- Moisture profile measurement (NIR).
- Vacuum pump efficiency analysis.
- Borescope inspection for internal equipment checks.
- Drying curve.
- 3D scanning of machines and parts.
These solutions can be applied at different stages of production, from stock preparation through to drying and winding, providing a complete view of the operation and enabling more accurate diagnostics.
Results already achieved in the field demonstrate the direct impact of these analyses. In one of Voith’s services, an assessment of the cross-direction moisture profile identified that the paper showed irregularities after drying. A detailed analysis indicated that the issue was not only related to operational settings, but to a fault in the steambox actuator controller. Correcting the system improved the moisture profile and significantly reduced breaks, increasing machine stability.
Another example involves vibration analysis, used to investigate failures in mechanical components such as bearings and gears. By identifying critical frequencies and amplitudes, it was possible to determine the origin of the problem and recommend specific interventions, preventing more severe damage and optimising equipment performance.
In pulsation measurements in the approach flow system, Voith was able to correlate pressure variations with recurring paper defects, such as marks and basis-weight instabilities. Identifying the source enabled targeted adjustments to the system, resulting in gains in quality and process control.
“The paper industry deals with extremely sensitive process variables, where small deviations can have a significant impact on quality and productivity. The key differentiator of measurements and diagnostics is turning data into clear answers, making it possible to identify the root cause of issues that are often not visible during operation,” explains Rodrigo Nagahama, Service Coordinator at Voith.
By combining cutting-edge technology with process expertise, Voith’s Measurements & Diagnostics portfolio reinforces the company’s positioning as a strategic partner to the paper industry. By turning data into actionable insights, the company enables its customers not only to solve problems, but also to anticipate failures and raise operational excellence to a new level.
