Ur­ban­i­za­tion and cli­mate change

Why the mo­bil­i­ty of the fu­ture will be de­cid­ed in our ci­ties.

The glo­bal trend to­wards ur­ban­i­za­tion con­tin­ues un­a­bat­ed. Ac­cord­ing to fore­casts, by as ear­ly as 2050 a­round 70 per­cent of the world’s pop­u­la­tion will live in ur­ban ar­eas. This de­vel­op­ment pres­ents huge chal­len­ges – es­pe­cial­ly in re­spect of cli­mate change and the bur­den on ur­ban in­fra­struc­tures.

To­day, ur­ban ar­eas are re­spon­si­ble for a­round 70 per­cent of glo­bal CO2 emis­sions, with traf­fic as a ma­jor dri­ver. How­ev­er, at the same time, towns and ci­ties of­fer enor­mous po­ten­tial to be part of the so­lu­tion. Through in­tel­li­gent mo­bil­i­ty con­cepts and sus­tain­able ur­ban plan­ning, they can make a vi­tal con­tri­bu­tion to o­ver­com­ing glo­bal cli­mate chal­len­ges.

In this con­text, a key role is played by pub­lic trans­port sys­tems: In­ter­ci­ty trains, sub­ways, tram­ways and fer­ries not on­ly fa­cil­i­tate af­ford­a­ble and com­fort­a­ble tra­vel for large seg­ments of the pop­u­la­tion – they al­so ef­fec­tive­ly re­duce traf­fic vol­umes, emis­sions and air pol­lu­tion.

The cli­mate-friend­ly fu­ture of ur­ban trans­port has long ceased to be just a dis­tant vi­sion. Elec­tric dri­ve­trains, hy­brid tech­nol­o­gies and hy­dro­gen so­lu­tions are mak­ing in­roads in­to pub­lic trans­port and are mak­ing it an in­creas­ing­ly im­port­ant tool in ur­ban decar­bon­i­za­tion.
